USEFUL TOOLS

[$] indicates a commercial product
[s] indicates a shareware product
[+] indicates a freeware product

FOR EDITING RESOURCES

[?] "ResEdit", by Apple
This is getting a bit long in the tooth now, and doesn't allow you to edit all existing Apple resources, although it is possible to add a lot of capacity in. I even have a 68K decompiler/editor in my copy of ResEdit.

[$] "Resorcerer", by mathemaesthetics, Inc
The Swiss Army Knife of Resource Editors.

FOR KEEPING TRACK OF BUGS/FEATURE WISHLISTS IN SOFTWARE

[$] "TestTrack", by Seapine Software [recommended by Mel Patrick]. When you start serious programming, either you grow your own bug tracker in FileMaker... or you buy this.

DEBUGGING

[?] 'macsBug', by Apple
ftp site | http site
No need to present this invaluable tool. Always make sure that you're using the latest 'stable' version for your machine, however or you'll be getting to know the 'Bowels of the Memory' more than you'd want to!

DOCUMENTATION & MISC

[$] Think Reference is now distributed by Xplain, the publishers of MacTech Magazine. Although they don't sell it directly, it is bundled on the MacTech archive CDs. MacTech can be found at: www.mactech.com

[+] Think Reference is particularly useful with the 'Reference Link' Init, by James W. Walker.
Install the Init and then press the Cntrl & Option keys when clicking on a Toolbox command in FB; this will launch Think Reference and take you to the page in Think Reference concerning that Call or Function. I find it invaluable, and would like to thank Tedd Sperling for introducing me to it.

[?] Inside Mac, by Apple Computer.
This is sold as books and on a CD, but also available on line, with technical Notes, FAQs, Q&A... in fact everything that you ever wanted to know about your Mac but just didn't know where to look! [You may also wish to browse about here, too!]

POLISHING APPS BEFORE RELEASE

For 'vers' and 'SIZE' resources
[+] "ApplPolish", by Bill Michael [List Mom on the English-language FB list]

For All-round Polishing
[$] "SoftPolish", by Bare Bones Software
Interesting also for localizers, this comes with a complete set of dictionaries for major European languages.

For creating Manuals or ReadMe files
[s] "DocMaker", by Green Mountain Software
[s] "eDoc", by Michel & François Touchot
[?] "SimpleText", by Apple Computer
Unable to find a URL for this - generally available on your System Disks.
[+] "BBEdit Lite", by BareBones Software
It's commercial big Brother - BBEdit - ain't bad either...
[$] "Acrobat", by Adobe Systems
A complex and expensive system for freeware apps, but sophisticated 'niche'-market shareware apps might like to check it out.

Also - MacTech magazine, has run articles on similar subjects:
"Writing a ReadMe File? Read This", by Tonya Engst [vol 14 - no. 10]
"Writing a Better ReadMe File", by Nick DeMello [vol 13 - no. 10]
"Trademarks Issues", by Brad Sniderman [vol 12 - no. 10]

LOCALISING

[$] "WordTranslator", would seem to be a set of dictionaries that also cover specific domains of activities.
[$]• "PowerGlot", by Florent Pillet
A powerful software localisation tool that is used by the FB-Euro team to localise FB^3 - nuff sed!
